Q:
I have had Parvo virus for the last two years. I am
now 20 weeks pregnant and the drs tell me that since I was
infected a long time prior to my pregnancy that everything
will be fine. My question is this: how long will this
infection last? It is now causing me symptoms similar to
rheumatoid arthritis. The doctors seem only able to treat the
symptoms. Do you know of anyone who has had a similar case to
mine? What can I do?
A: Parvovirus (also known as 5th disease in
kids) can be quite devastating in pregnant women. It has been
known to cause fetal defects such as fetal hydrops and
congestive heart failure. Luckily, most pregnant women who
have parvovirus deliver healthy babies. The good thing is that
parvovirus is self limiting and shouldn't last more than a few
weeks. There isn't a treatment for it, other than treating the
symptoms. It definitely can cause arthritic symptoms. It
sounds like your pregnancy has been doing well, most likely
why your doctor isn't concerned. You can be checked by blood
work to see if you have active parvovirus if you are
concerned.
